Discuss Benefits of Exercise Overall Rank: 48
Percent of individuals with major depression with documentation (on at least one occasion) of discussion regarding the benefits of exercise and the factors that would increase its effectiveness (e.g., realistic expectations, frequency and intensity of exercise development of a feasible plan).
Any of several psychological disorders characterized by abnormal emotional states and including especially major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. Also called affective disorder.
Additional Domain(s) : Health Promotion
Rationale
The recommended treatment options have an evidence base: psychological therapy, medication and self-help have all been shown to be effective. The choice of treatment will be a consequence of the assessment process and shared decision-making.

There may be instances when the most effective intervention is not available (for example, cognitive behavioral therapy [CBT]) or is not the treatment option chosen by the patient. In these cases, the healthcare professional will need to consider, after discussion with the patient, whether it is acceptable to offer one of the other recommended treatments. If the preferred treatment option is currently unavailable, the healthcare professional will also have to consider whether it is likely to become available within a useful timeframe.

Summarized CommentsAdd Comment
  • *This is very progressive - big potential to change practice
  • Question/statement a bit unclear - is "major" depression, "mild" or "moderate" depression which is the focus?
  • Not under control of PHC.
