Non-Psychiatric Health Visits Overall Rank: 138
Proportion of persons with serious mental illness who had at least one physician visit for non-psychiatric reasons during the last year.
Domain : Accessibility
Clients/patients are able to obtain care and services at the right place and the right time, based on their respective needs. Accessibility would include such things as waiting times, physician availability, geographical proximity, extended service hours, etc.
Additional Domain(s) : Acceptability, Physical Health Intervention
Rationale
Persons with SMI have poorer health status and a higher rate of premature mortality than the general population. Through self-neglect and poor access to general health care, the medical needs of this group are often not met.

Level of Evidence
III: Preliminary research evidence only or evidence based on consensus opinion only.

Summarized CommentsAdd Comment
  • Many medications used for illness cause physical problems, i.e. increased cholesterol, increased glucose and thus more careful physical health follow-up is needed
  • * Actionability of this measure is determined by many factors.
  • * Would be better if it was percentage who had an actual check-up, particularly for persons with SPMI.
  • I don't think this is actionable it would not include people with undiagnosed mental illness.
