Acute Day Hopsitals Overall Rank: 89
Acute day hospitals should be considered as a clinical and cost-effective option for the provision of acute care, both as an alternative to acute admission to inpatient care and to facilitate early discharge from inpatient care.
This special area domain refers to those patients whose conditions require an immediate intervention, such as an emergency room visit.
Additional Domain(s) : Comprehensiveness, Continuity
Rationale
The services most likely to help people who are acutely ill include crisis resolution and home treatment teams, early intervention teams, community mental health teams and acute day hospitals. If these services are unable to meet the needs of a service user, or if the Mental Health Act is used, inpatient treatment may prove necessary for a period of time. Whatever services are available, a broad range of social, group and physical activities are essential elements of the services provided. For a mixed population of service users, including those with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, acute day hospital care is a viable alternative to inpatient care, reducing inpatient bed use without adversely affecting the family, rate of recovery or social functioning.

Level of Evidence
I: Consistently higher quality studies specifically focused on primary mental health care.

Summarized CommentsAdd Comment
  • Telephone support is the cheapest brick in the info highway and an alternative (along with others) to ADH's
  • Why the words "cost effective". Is a kidney transplant "cost effective"?
  • Despite others comments, I think this measure could and should be under PHC control
